Sambatyon. The mysterious river beyond which the Ten Shevatim (Tribes) were banished so long ago. All week, its rushing waters hurl stones in their wake. Only on Shabbos does the river come to rest (Bereishis Rabbah 11:6). And so the Ten Shevatim are trapped—during the week they cannot cross the raging river, while on Shabbos they may not cross it.
In a way, we are all like the Ten Shevatim; we wish to break out of our routine, but the river of life rages on.
